Doc Severinsen, who was the band leader of the Tonight Show Band for 25 years, is a shining example of a professional musician.

Severinsen remains at the top of his game while into his 70's. He practices his trumpet 3+ hours per day to maintain his technique and to learn new music.

A brass instrument requires uniquely physically demanding work in order for the player to maintain a high level of technique. This sort of practicing is a true workout, but Severinsen has maintained this rigorous practice schedule throughout his entire professional life.

Severinsen now performs regularly as a soloist with symphony orchestras. He conducts himself on stage with the utmost professionalism. He arrives at least an hour early for rehearsals and performances to warm up. He plays his hardest in rehearsal, and stays afterward to continue practicing his parts. He performs wonderfully in concerts.

As always, he is flashy in his clothes; people expect that of him and he does not disappoint. His stage persona engages the audience well, but he is not just an engaging personality -- he is a true professional who plays with the best of the best. And he is over the age of 70.

This is mastery.
